The mendicant orders-Augustinians, Carmelites, Dominicans, Franciscans, and several other groups-spread across Europe apace from the early thirteenth century, profoundly influencing numerous aspect of medieval life. This study to examine the rise and fall of a medieval religious group, the Order of Apostles, that began with orthodox support but ended in the fires of heresy.

Originating in 1260 in Parma the group was founded by Gerard Segarelli who believed that a life of apostolic poverty was the true path of Christian devotion. Segarelli was initially supported by the Church but as his cohort grew in number and fame he was charged with heresy by the powerful Franciscans, was tried, and burnt as a heretic. The Order's control was assumed by Fra Dolcino who led the Apostles into direct opposition to the Roman Church and was himself executed in 1307.

This is an important study presenting new findings in the history of medieval heresy, as well as placing the Order of Apostles within the larger context of political, economic and social history. By examining the rise and fall of the Apostles, Pierce shows the dramatic consequences of the transformation of European society during the high Middle Ages.

Ritual Memory brings together two areas of study which have hitherto rarely been studied in comparison: liturgy and the apocryphal Acts of the apostles. The book gives an analysis of the liturgical celebration of the apostles in the medieval West and examines the incorporation of the apocrypha in practices of ritual commemoration. Toen David Gorlaeus (1591-1612) op 21 jarige leeftijd overleed, liet hij twee baanbrekende manuscripten achter, die zich op het kruispunt van de filosofie, de ontluikende natuurwetenschappen en theologie begaven. Nadat ze eenmaal werden gepubliceerd had zijn werk een opmerkelijke invloed op de evolutie van het zeventiende-eeuwse denken.

Doordat Gorlaeus' identiteit onbekend was, ontstonden al snel zeer uiteenlopende interpretaties van de publicaties. Ondanks dat Gorlaeus 'slechts' een beginnend theologiestudent was, dachten lezers uit de zeventiende eeuw het met een anti-aristotelische denker en een voorloper van Descartes van doen te hebben. Twintigste-eeuwse historici schilderden hem af als een atomist, natuurwetenschapper en zelfs als chemicus.

Het Geel-Witte Boekje wil journalisten helpen 'katholieke blunders' te voorkomen. Voor hen en voor allen die geinteresseerd zijn in het rooms-katholieke geloofsleven is dit boekje samengesteld.

Aan het begin van de jaren zestig van de 20ste eeuw was een groot deel van de Nederlandse bevolking nog katholiek. Trouw werd elke zondag de kerk bezocht. Tien jaar later was dat volgens velen niet langer het geval: de kerken waren leeggelopen en de katholieke kerk was zijn invloed op de maatschappij voorgoed kwijtgeraakt.

Volgens historicus Maarten van den Bos is dit heersende beeld van de ineenstorting van de eens zo fier overeind staande katholieke zuil niet juist. Al sinds het begin van de jaren vijftig werd in katholieke kring intensief gedebatteerd over de toekomst van kerk en geloofsleven. Er werd een stevig vernieuwingsproces in gang gezet met als doel de Kerk een nieuwe plaats te geven in een veranderende samenleving. Dat mislukte, maar de gelovigen verlieten allerminst een ingeslapen instituut. Sterker nog, de wortels van de veranderingen in de jaren zestig lagen mede in de kerk.

Een toegankelijke inleiding in het katholiek sociaal denken. Een initiatief van het Verband van Katholieke Maatschappelijke Organisaties (VKMO). Onze samenleving is volop in beweging. Op tal van manieren dragen mensen hun steentje bij aan verbanden die prettig en vertrouwd voelen. De hoofdstukken zijn geschreven door mensen met veel kennis en ervaring op deze terreinen en zijn gericht op de praktijk van het ambtelijke werk. Aan elk hoofdstuk zijn gespreksvragen toegevoegd. Zo is het niet alleen een boek voor persoonlijke toerusting, maar ook geschikt voor bezinnende momenten tijdens de kerkenraadsvergadering.

Het Onze Vader is de belangrijkste liturgische tekst van de kerk. Maar wat is een goede vertaling? Zuurmond vergelijkt vele oude en nieuwe vertalingen en legt achterliggende beweegredenen uit. Hij toont haarscherp de sterke en zwakke punten aan van onder meer de Nieuwe Bijbelvertaling, 'het oecumenisch Onze Vader', Engelse en Duitse vertalingen, maar ook van vertalingen uit de oudheid. Zuurmond dringt aan op vertaalprecisie en zorgvuldigheid. In hemelsnaam, want onvoldoende oog voor context en literaire vorm doet de brontekst geweld aan en zijn betekenis verbleken.

In hemelsnaam is een must voor ieder die meer wil weten over de betekenis van de oorspronkelijke tekst van het Onze Vader en zijn vertaalachtergronden. Dit boek is actueel vanwege de vraag welke versie de kerken zullen kiezen voor gebruik in de eredienst.

Bomen vertellen ons wat leven is. In aansprekende poezie en treffende foto's nemen de auteurs ons mee op een wandeling door de seizoenen, en laten ons zien hoeveel bomen ons kunnen leren. Niet zonder reden spreken bomen velen tot de verbeelding. In hun vertrouwdheid met de aarde, in hun onderlinge samenhang en in hun ontvankelijkheid voor het hogere demonstreren bomen ons wat leven is, compleet leven. Onder de hoede van de bomen en in gesprek met hen maken de dichter Hans Bouma en de fotografe Aly Brug een wandeling door onze vier seizoenen. Een wandeling waar je wijzer van wordt, levenswijzer. Ook een wandeling die je bepaalt bij de seizoenen van je eigen levensverhaal. Voordat de wandeling begint, biedt Hans Bouma een poëtische en religieuze plaatsbepaling van de boom.

Als je rondreist merk je dat het beeld van Jezus behoorlijk dominant aanwezig is in Europa. Ook elders in de wereld vind je regelmatig een kruis waar een mens in doodsnood zijn getergde gezicht en bloedende handen toont. Tijdens vakanties zoeken sommigen hem bewust op, anderen komen hem toevallig tegen: overal zijn wel kerken of kapelletjes waar hij te vinden is. Soms hangt hij daar op zijn paasbest, pas gerestaureerd en opgepoetst, een andere keer zit hij geheel onder het stof en heeft de tand des tijds zijn werk gedaan.

In dit boekje zijn veertig gedichten opgenomen waarin de auteur een aantal van zijn ontmoetingen met hem heeft beschreven. Vaak had ook de schrijver niet in de gaten met wie hij werkelijk te maken had.

Tien heldere en prikkelende verhalen over de vraag waarom je vandaag de dag nog zou geloven.

In dit beknopte gespreksboekje geeft de Rotterdamse predikant Bert Kuipers met tien argumenten aan waarom je vandaag nog zou geloven. Daarbij spreekt hij over beweegredenen als 'omdat je mens bent', 'om je niet over te geven aan de nietsigheid' en 'omdat God in de verhalen woont'. Ieder argument licht hij toe en toetst hij op zijn houdbaarheid. De hoofdstukken sluiten af met een aantal vragen en stellingen die aanzetten tot gesprek over het thema.

Als jongetje geloofde Henk van Os al in God. En zijn geloof, dacht hij, was minstens zo oprecht als dat van Petrus. Om het te bewijzen, hoefde hij alleen maar even over water te lopen. En zo haalde Van Os natte voeten in het Paterswoldse meer.

Meer dan zestig jaar later verklaart zijn zoon Pieter dat de belangstelling voor religieuze kunst van zijn vader niet met zijn geloof te maken heeft, maar met 'een drang tot godsdienst'. Van Os senior is verbaasd. En ook geintrigeerd. Maar de materie blijkt zich slecht te lenen voor een gesprek bij een kopje koffie. En zo beginnen de twee een briefwisseling over geloofszaken, die jaren in beslag zal nemen.

In de brieven die vader en zoon elkaar schrijven, komt van alles voorbij. Indringende jeugdherinneringen aan sherrydrinkende dominees. Mystieke ervaringen bij de San Dominico in Siena en op het Spui in Amsterdam. Maar ook persoonlijke drama's, als de plotselinge dood van een zusje, en later van een zoon, die tegelijk broer is. De gedachten die deze persoonlijke ervaringen oproepen, verdiepen ze met inzichten van filosofen, psychologen en (kunst) historici.

Wat is geloof? In het gesprek tussen vader en zoon probeert de zoon erachter te komen waarom zijn generatie de deur naar een georganiseerd geloofsleven helemaal heeft dichtgeslagen. De vader probeert grip te krijgen op zijn eigen geloof. Toch is hun uitgangspunt hetzelfde: het is tegenwoordig niet interessant meer te vragen wat niet te geloven, maar wat wel.

'Als een pluisje in de wind' is de soms onthutsende en dan weer ontroerende autobiografie van Bloeme Evers-Emden. Geboren in 1926 groeide ze op in, wat leek, de beschermde omgeving van een socialistisch Joods Amsterdams diamantslijpersgezin. In de oorlog verliest ze vrijwel haar gehele familie. Ze wordt zelf ook opgepakt maar weet uit de Hollandsche Schouwburg te ontsnappen en duikt onder. Ze wordt in 1944 verraden. Bloeme belandt in Auschwitz en wordt geselecteerd voor een werkkamp. In mei 1945 zijn het de Russen die haar bevrijden. Terug in Amsterdam slaagt ze erin een nieuw bestaan op te bouwen. Met Hans Evers sticht ze een gezin. Onder invloed van de kinderen krijgt huize Evers steeds meer orthodoxe trekken. De familie gaat kosjer eten. De oudste zoon, Raph, is sinds 1990 rabbijn. Op latere leeftijd besluit Bloeme alsnog te gaan studeren, wanneer ze promoveert is ze 63.

Als ontwikkelingspsychologe deed ze onder andere taboedoorbrekend onderzoek naar hoe onderduikkinderen op de oorlogsjaren terugkijken. In de resultaten van haar studies resoneert de pijn die ze zelf heeft geleden. Met veel zelfspot en een kien oog voor detail maakt Bloeme ons deelgenoot van haar unieke leven. Op meeslepende wijze vertelt ze over de onderduik, de kampen, maar ook over haar eerste reis naar de jonge staat Israel en over haar geheime 'Mossad-missie' uit 1982 naar de Sovjet-Unie, waar ze contact legt met Joodse families die niet mogen uitreizen. Hoe kan een mens na al het leed dat haar door de nazi's is aangedaan, zo zachtmoedig, sterk en positief in het leven staan? Dat is het mysterie Bloeme Evers-Emden, een klein wonder dat dit boek zo onvergetelijk maakt.

Annie Wolff uit Rotterdam was van joodse afkomst en trouwde eind 1937 met de niet-joodse arts Daniel Johannes Otten. Toen zij, zwanger van haar eerste kind, in 1938 plotseling weduwe werd, kon zij niet vermoeden welke rampspoed haar nog meer te wachten zou staan. Na 1940 diende de jodenvervolging zich sluipenderwijs aan en werd steeds nadrukkelijker, met uiteindelijk een fatale afloop.

Het verhaal van de jodenvervolging is al vaak verteld, maar zelden op zo'n direct invoelbare wijze. In de brieven die Annie aan haar familieleden stuurde zijn we op een directe en onthutsende wijze getuige van wat deze jonge vrouw overkwam en hoe het net zich onafwendbaar om haar heen sloot. Ze probeert op allerlei manieren overeind te blijven in een steeds vijandiger wereld, maar tevergeefs. Uiteindelijk sterft Annie in 1944 in Bergen-Belsen. Haar half-joodse toen vijfjarige zoontje Daniel werd niet vervolgd en bleef in Nederland alleen achter.

Daniel, de auteur van dit boek, maakte een selectie uit de brieven die zijn moeder ontving en schreef tussen 1930 en 1944. We zijn in dit boek getuige van achtereenvolgens een liefdesgeschiedenis, een familiegeschiedenis en een holocaust-geschiedenis.

De meeste werken die tegenwoordig religie bekritiseren, beperken zich tot het gewelddadige karakter van geïnstitutionaliseerde godsdiensten. Of ze houden het bij een kritiek op hun conservatieve of achterlijke moraal. Echte kritiek op het mechanisme dat godsdienst produceert, gebeurt nog zelden. Waar de negentiende eeuw bulkte van de kritiek op de historiciteit van de Bijbelverhalen en terecht de historiciteit van Jezus van Nazareth in vraag stelde, is dit nu een niche voor specialisten. Atheïsten zijn daar blijkbaar niet langer in geïnteresseerd. Lucas Catherine wel.Het mythische karakter van alle godsdiensten, en zeker van het christendom, is het onderwerp van zijn boek. De verhalen van het Oude Testament zijn allemaal gebaseerd op nog oudere verhalen die als mythen circuleerden in het Midden-Oosten. Sex and World Peace unsettles a variety of assumptions in political and security discourse, demonstrating that the security of women is a vital factor in the security of the state and its incidence of conflict and war.

G.I. Gurdjieff (d. 1949) remains an important, if controversial, figure in early 20th-century Western Esoteric thought. For a number of years, Gurdjieff traveled around Central Asia, Asia, Turkey, and elsewhere seeking spiritual knowledge. Of particular importance in Gurdjieff's accounts is his experience with a number of Sufi teachers and orders. Yet, what has been looked at far less is the later influence and exchange of those involved in Gurdjieff's ideas and Sufism.

This book explores the introduction of Gurdjieff's discourse on spiritual transformation in the late 20th century and its relation to Sufism. This book does not simply show or demonstrate the influence of Gurdjieff and his ideas, but analyzes and assesses the specific discourse on and about Sufism in the context of contemporary spiritual and religious teachings, particularly in the United States, and highlights some of the adaptive, boundary-crossing, and hybrid features that have led to the development and continuing influence of Sufism.

Nieuw in Nederland: Feesten en rituelen in verandering levert een bijdrage aan het publieke debat over immigranten, cultuur en nationalisme. Vieringen van nieuwe Nederlanders blijken een hybride waarin de Nederlandse geschiedenis even bepalend is als de tradities in het land van oorsprong. Feesten en rituelen lijken weliswaar stabiel, maar zijn voortdurend in verandering. Onder de noemer 'nieuwe Nederlandsheid' schetst Nieuw in Nederland niet zozeer een portret van immigrantenculturen, maar van cultuur in Nederland.

As a prequel to books on Hitler, fascism and genocide, the book turns towards ideas and attitudes that preceded and shaped the ideologies of the 1920s and 1940s. Apart from the long tradition of Catholic anti-Jewish prejudices, the book discusses new and old alternatives to European modernity offered by Catholics in Germany and England. Numerous events in the interwar years provoked anti-Jewish responses among Catholics: the revolutionary end of the war and financial scandals in Germany; Palestine and the Spanish Civil War in England. At the same time the rise of fascism and National Socialism gave Catholics the opportunity to respond to the anti-democratic and antisemitic waves these movements created in their wake.

Church, nation and race is a political history of ideas that introduces Catholic views of modern society, race, nation and the 'Jewish question'. It shows to what extent these views were able to inform political and social activity. This study will interest academics and students of antisemitism, European history, German and British history.

How many people know that a modern pope publicly referred to Jews as "dogs;" that two other modern popes called the Jewish religion "Satan's synagogue"; that at the beginning of the twentieth century another pope refused to save the life of a Jew accused of ritual murder, even though the pope knew the man was innocent? Lastly, how many people know that only a decade before the rise of Hitler, another pope supported priests who called for the extermination of all the Jews in the world?

The answer has to be "great numbers of people" since those accusations appeared in David I. But Were the Popes Against the Jews? is not only about the disclosure of these shocking slanders, however fascinating and important such an exposé is. In the broader perspective, it is about the power of ideology to subvert historical judgments, whether the latter concern the origins of anti-Semitism and the papacy, the distortion of documents to indict Pius XII, or the fabrication of Pius XI as "codependent collaborator" with Mussolini (the announced subject of Kertzer's next book). In the aftermath of 9/11 there has been much talk of a need to engage on a meaningful level with Islam, but where do we begin and what is the right approach?

Why did some Buddhist translators in China interpolate terms designating an agent which did not appear in the original texts?

The Chinese made use of raw material imported from India; however, they added some seasonings peculiar to China and developed their own recipes about how to construct the ideas of Buddhism. While Indian Buddhists constructed their ideas of self by means of empiricism, anti-Brahmanism and analytic reasoning, the Chinese Buddhists constructed their ideas of self by means of non-analytic insights, utilising pre-established epistemology and cosmogony. Furthermore, many of the basic renderings had specific implications that were peculiar to China.

For example, while shen in philosophical Daoism originally signified an agent of thought, which disintegrates after bodily death, Buddhists added to it the property of permanent existence. Since many Buddhists in China read the reinterpreted term shen with the implications of the established epistemology and cosmogony, they came to develop their own ideas of self. After the late 6C, highly educated Buddhist theorists came to avoid including the idea of an imperishable soul in their doctrinal system. However, the idea of a permanent agent of perception remained vividly alive even during the development of Chinese Buddhism after the 7C.

Pragmatism: An Introduction provides a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the arguments of the central figures of American pragmatism. Despite Platonism's unquestioned claim to being one of the most influential movements in the history of philosophy, for a long time the conventional wisdom was that Platonists of late antiquity, or Neoplatonists, were so focused on otherworldly metaphysics that they simply neglected any serious study of the sensible world, which after all is 'merely' an image of the intelligible world.

Only recently has this conventional wisdom begun to be dispelled. In fact, it is precisely because these thinkers did see the sensible world as an image of the intelligible world that they devoted so much time and energy to understanding its inner workings. Thus we find Neoplatonists writing on embryology, physiology, meteorology, and astronomy, among other subjects. Neoplatonism and the Philosophy of Nature collects essays by leading international scholars in the field which shed new light on how the Neoplatonists sought to understand and explain nature and natural phenomena.
