Dit boek doet een hartstochtelijke poging om duidelijk te maken waarin het Jodendom als godsdienst uniek is. Het is een levendig en prikkelend essay dat uitgaat van de stelling dat een vruchtbare dialoog tussen de godsdiensten begint met het respecteren van verschillen. De auteur gaat die dialoog aan het hart – als voormalig predikant is hij vertrouwd met de christelijke wereld en haar theologie, als actief bezoeker van een sjoel is hij inmiddels ook diepgaand ingevoerd in de denk- en belevingswereld van het Jodendom.

René Süss (1939) deed veel stof opwaaien met zijn proefschrift Luthers theologisch testament. Over de Joden en hun leugens (2006). Van deze studie verschijnt in 2010 een herdruk bij VU University Press.

Altijd mazzel. Een wereldreis langs joodse gemeenschappen

De auteur schetst niet alleen een beeld van het dagelijks leven van joden wereldwijd, maar beschrijft ook – mede op basis van historisch feitenonderzoek – hoe de 2600 jaar oude joodse diaspora vervlochten is met belangrijke hoofdstukken uit de wereldgeschiedenis.

Kuzari, het boek van de Chazaar

The Hebrew Republic. Jewish Sources and the Transformation of European Political Thought

According to a commonplace narrative, the rise of modern political thought in the West resulted from secularization—the exclusion of religious arguments from political discourse. But in this pathbreaking work, Eric Nelson argues that this familiar story is wrong. Instead, he contends, political thought in early-modern Europe became less, not more, secular with time, and it was the Christian encounter with Hebrew sources that provoked this radical transformation.

During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Christian scholars began to regard the Hebrew Bible as a political constitution designed by God for the children of Israel. Newly available rabbinic materials became authoritative guides to the institutions and practices of the perfect republic. This thinking resulted in a sweeping reorientation of political commitments. In the book’s central chapters, Nelson identifies three transformative claims introduced into European political theory by the Hebrew revival: the argument that republics are the only legitimate regimes; the idea that the state should coercively maintain an egalitarian distribution of property; and the belief that a godly republic would tolerate religious diversity. Met Ondergang schreef Jacques Presser in de jaren zestig op onnavolgbare wijze over de jodenvervolging in Nederland. Voorzitter van de Joodse Raad. De herinneringen van David Cohen (1941-1943)

Geen instantie heeft na de oorlog zo onder vuur gelegen vanwege haar functioneren tijdens de Duitse bezetting als de Joodsche Raad. Hoofdrolspeler in deze bewogen jaren was prof. David Cohen, samen met Abraham Asscher voorzitter van de Joodsche Raad. Op verzoek van prof. Jacques Presser en dr. Loe de Jong van het Rijksinstituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie dicteerde Cohen in 1956 na lang aarzelen zijn herinneringen. Voor het eerst verschijnen deze belangwekkende memoires in boekvorm. 

`Om erger te voorkomen' geeft inzicht in de betekenis van De Joodsche Raad, Cohens intenties en twijfels, het pijnlijke geworstel tussen zijn joodse achterban en de Duitse autoriteiten, de uiteindelijke, onvermijdelijke deportatie van de joodse gemeenschap, Cohens eigen vertrek naar kamp Westerbork en vervolgens kamp Theresienstadt en tot slot de naoorlogse deceptie. Was er sprake van onaanvaardbare samenwerking of probeerde Cohen `erger te voorkomen' Het is deze vraag die centraal staat in zijn herinneringen.

Dealing with the nexus of religion and power, the present volume radically undermines the idea that the political relevance of religion is a thing of the past. Its essays treat power as a central aspect of religion on many levels, from that of macro-politics through the links between religion and nationhood to the level of personal empowerment or its obverse, disempowerment. Power and religion are both omnipresent in human action and interaction. There is no human act that does not include some kind of faith in a positive outcome and no deed in which power does not play some role. People obviously can attempt to use religion as an instrument to enhance their power or improve their status, whether personally or at the level of the nation-state. Yet religion is in principle ambiguous in relation to power: It can disempower as well as empower, and it can even function as a critique of existing power relations. Een speelse vorm van spiritualiteit maakt zingeving weer vrij en open. Het maakt het mogelijk de eigen visie serieus te nemen zonder in absolute claims te vervallen. De afnemende sociale controle in onze moderne samenleving biedt een prachtkans om dit zingevingspel weer voluit te gaan spelen. Exclusief denken wordt weer inclusief, en dat brengt mensen bij elkaar zoals religie van oorsprong beoogt. Machtsprocessen hebben het spelelement stelselmatig verdrongen. Dit boek biedt een weg terug.
